Erma Z. Drobnis is Director of the Andrology Laboratory at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) School of Medicine. She has studied sperm biology and reproductive medicine in diverse species for more than 35 years, including humans, domestic, and model species in the areas of clinical semen analysis, cryobiology, and cell biology of fertilization. She completed her PhD in Physiology at the University of California, Davis (UCD), working with advisor Dr. David Katz, writing a dissertation on the biophysics of sperm-oocyte interaction in mammals. She remained at UCD for postdoctoral training with Dr. John Crowe in Zoology and Dr. Jim Overstreet in Ob/Gyn, studying sperm cryobiology in humans, mice and a variety of domestic species. Dr. Drobnis continued her work at UCD as research faculty in Ob/Gyn and in the School of Veterinary Medicine before accepting her current position in 1994, achieving HCLD board certification that year. Dr. Drobnis has published peer-reviewed and review articles on clinical Andrology and sperm biology. Recently, she has worked on 1) the multicenter Study for Future Families with Dr. Shanna Swan, publishing results of semen quality in men from urban versus rural areas, 2) studies of sperm glycobiology with Dr. Gary F. Clark, 3) IUI and PrEP for HIV-discordant couples, 4) HIV transmission at the endocervix with Drs. Danny Schust and Alison Quayle, 5) results of hydraulic fracturing chemicals on male reproduction with Dr. Susan C. Nagel and 5) written a book on medications and male reproduction, as well as providing experimental design and biostatistical expertise for Resident and faculty research in her Department. She has been involved in the problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum in the School of Medicine at MU since 1996. Dr. Drobnis is an inspector for the CAP Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program, is a member of the ABB Certification Examination Task Force, and is active in the American Society of Andrology Executive Council. Dr. Drobnis has been a member of the ASRM since 1988 and has served on multiple committees, including twice as Chair of the Membership Committee; she received the ASRM service milestone award for over 20 years of service in 2016. As a member of the RBPG (currently SRBT), she worked on the Abstract Review, Curriculum Development and Program Committees, and has served as faculty for a postgraduate course, seminars and roundtables at annual meetings. She is a charter member and past Board of Directors member of the Society for Male Reproduction Urology (SMRU), and currently serves as chair of the SMRU Traveling Scholars program.
