Breaking stigmas and discrimination in transgender and gender nonconforming care

Understanding of gender identity and the need to optimize care for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals has rapidly expanded. Individuals who are transgender and gender nonconforming face stigma and discrimination which influences their experiences of and willingness to seek health care. In this session we will explore the basics of providing culturally sensitive care for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. Forms of stigma faced by transgender and gender non-conforming individuals and implications for health will be explore. Key terms and concepts related to transgender and gender nonconforming identity will be described and participants will learn interventions to create a clinical environment that is welcoming to transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.
